  • New Orleans Apartment The centerpiece of the apartment is the scenic mural of life on the Mississippi River wrapping around the living room. The wallpaper was made by DeGournay, Ltd., and based on the 1941 book, "The Story of the Mississippi", by Marshall McClintock with illustrations by C.H. DeWitt. The scenes depict riverboats, historic buildings and daily life on the river.

  • Soho Loft The Cabinet Room is a "cabinet of curiosities" where a collection of natural and found objects are arranged along bookcases and window sills. It also serves as a sitting room with pillows made from antique textiles and a daybed covered in a silk brocade.

  • Philadelphia Townhouse The guest bedroom features a lively custom colored wallpaper from Adelphi Paper Hanging called "Ada Harris". The early American pattern is a traditional design that feels modern in this context.

  • Town & Country Showhouse The focus of the master bedroom is the canopy bed draped with tailored fabric panels and ribbon ties at the posts. Feather finials lighten the mood along with the dramatic portrait by the artist Alison Nash.

  • Soho Loft The main living area of the loft is separated by a wall of bookcases housing the couple's extensive collection of books on cooking and culinary history. The wall partitions include a pair of colored glass doors that open into a space called the "Cabinet Room." The collar of the skylight is lined with yellow mirror.

  • Hamptons Beach House A view of the opposite end of the living room further shows the delicate interplay of light and color. The subtle colors of the pillows, green garden stools, and mirrored tables add texture and depth.

  • Upper East Side Townhouse The living room of this Georgian Revival town house is anchored by a 19th century Indian carpet. The room is arranged to emulate the decoration of American rooms in the early 20th century.

  • Shingle Style House in Maine In contrast to the other rooms in the house, the library is an introspective space. The blue used on the paneling was a color popular in 18th century Georgian homes and is complimented by red linen curtains set in window pockets.The colors are repeated in the Tabriz carpet which was designed for the room.

  • Southwest Ranch The heart of the house is this living room, also called the Spanish Room. The bookcases hold a collection of books about early New Mexico and New Spain.

  • Richly Decorated Apartment A custom arcaded frame, which includes mirrored panels, was built around the original arched windows in order to accomodate curtains and window shades.

  • New Orleans Apartment The bedroom is lined with a hand blocked wallpaper. Audubon's "California Vulture" hangs above the Creole bed.

  • Brownstone Renewed The back parlor was decorated as a formal reception room. The fireplace wall was designed to feature a rare pair of Georgian sconces and an 18th century Irish mirror.

  • Upper East Side Townhouse The dining room's paneling was designed to accommodate an antique set of Chinese wallpaper. In addition, an early 19th century mantle with its original grate was installed.

  • Beaux Arts Apartment The drawing room is decorated to seat large groups of people for meetings and special events. The paneling, attributed to Maison Jansen, was originally white and gold, but refinished in a pale blue strie to give the room a contemporary lift.

  • House for Post-War Art The Client requested low-key colors, clean upholstery models and uncomplicated curtains to showcase the fine collection of Post-War art and European antiques. The walls are upholstered in russet-toned wool and the curtains made of cream colored silk.

  • Hamptons Beach House The living room is centered on an antique Axminster carpet. The design and strong colors of the rug anchor the furniture, at the same time counterbalancing the more muted colors of the upholstery and curtains. The room has a set of illustrations from Henri Matisse's Jazz series.

  • Greek Revival Decoration Color is paramount to the decoration of the rooms. The first floor parlors use an old-fashioned combination of yellow and green derived in part from a favored chintz selected by client Julia Reed.

  • Town & Country Showhouse A guest bedroom has upholstered silk walls stenciled with enlarged kimono motifs. The full height yellow serge curtains add a strong vertical element that makes the room feel larger and brighter.

  • Old Nantucket House In the master bedroom another Chinese wallpaper pattern and Canton matting on the floor make more subtle connections to the house's maritime past.

  • Southern Neoclassical Townhouse The client requested that the decoration of the rooms incorporate paintings from his collections and emulate the original decorative scheme where possible. The antique mantel is a replacement for the lost original.

  • Brownstone Renewed The front parlor is part entrance hall, part living room. The walls are upholstered in a gaufraged wool serge and the woodwork has been grained to resemble walnut. The centerpiece of the room is a painting by Bo Barlett.

  • Town & Country Showhouse The breakfast room combines a Saarinen table, slipcovered lolling chairs, a plaid drugget and a mobile from the Guggenheim Museum shop.

  • Shingle Style House in Maine The dining room features a large bay window with a set of custom curved benches to follow the arc of the curve. The blue glass candelabras are from the clients' collection of antique colored glass.

  • Old Nantucket House The dining room windows are hung with sheer white linen swags, an 18th century style that has since remained popular. The turquoise walls look particularly handsome in candlelight.

  • Apartment for Collectors of 20th Century Art The focal point of the library is a portrait by Picasso. This painting, which could be construed as the inspiration for the design of the room, was in fact brought in by the Client after the decoration was complete. The bookshelves are filled with antique and vintage books on art along with pre-Columbian artifacts.

  • Philadelphia Townhouse The drawing room features a Chippendale sofa whose curving silhouette contrasts with the more linear contemporary upholstered pieces. The painting above the mantel, The Odalisque (1845) was painted by Rembrandt Peale.

  • House for Post-War Art An Ed Ruscha painting of Felix the Cat is paired with a black and gold japanned commode; one of the many handsome, and sometimes surprising, juxtapositions found throughout the house.
